Viticulture
During the last 20 years, Camenère and Malbec have become emblematic varieties for South American wines. With different characteristics, they both complement each other in terms of structure and flavor. Malbec completes this wine, highlighting the fruitiness and mouthfeel of our Carmenère, whose vines were planted on the slopes of our Melozal estate more than 20 years ago. Located close to the Loncomilla river, this zone benefits from a warm and dry climate, as well as from the minerality of the granitic soils of Maule’s Secano Interior (Interior Dryland). The Malbec vineyard, on the other hand, established in the La Constancia estate, was planted more than 50 years ago on soils of clayey-alluvial basis. Trellised to the vertical shoot position, both varieties complement each other to perfection in a sort of South American - South Cone blend
Vinification
We harvested the grapes by hand in 10 kilo-boxes and then made a bunch and berry selection in the vineyard and at the winery. To make the wine, we chose a Bordeaux-style vinification, including a cold maceration at 5°C, which was carried out with special care to obtain good tannins and color extraction. The wine had a total maceration of 21 to 25 days, and it completed the malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and 2,000 ltr foudres where we kept it for 12 months before experiencing a soft filtration and bottling.
